5 Ways To Be More Intentional And Efficient With Your Blog Post Content

As bloggers, we all have a tendency to button mash our blog posts just to get something published. Content is king (and queen) in everything that we do as bloggers, but how do you make sure you are writing about topics that truly matter?

By defining the purpose of each and every blog post, creating a content calendar, and being smart with your time, you can ensure you are making strategic progress in your blogging business.

Why is it important to create strategic blog content?

Unless you are blogging merely for fun, you have a million-and-one goals and aspirations as a blogger.

Without a plan in place, you will waste time on a regular basis creating content that:

  • Doesn’t listen to your audience
  • Doesn’t meet your blogging goals
  • Doesn’t set you up for success in seasonal content

Plus, your strategy can be easy to develop!

Sure, the work involved is a different matter, but merely asking yourself a few questions and doing some research will help you form a plan to be intentional and smart every single day.

The Purpose Of Your Blog Posts

Define the PURPOSE of each post:

  • Meets goals (make money, traffic (targeted keywords, build on other popular posts), etc)
  • Pillar content for niche (posts critical for your audience that will be referenced continually)
  • Fill a need for your audience (poll your audience!)
  • Seasonal (interest starts early)

Create a list of blog posts with most critical or highest priority first (shit happens)

Mix up the types of posts to attract different parts of your audience (and vary your work for the month – avoid burnout).

You can also look at the trends of your online audience to help you determine blog post topics to focus on during each month of the year. This will line you up to create content when your audience is actually going to be actively searching for your article!

This would include upcoming holidays, school schedules, upcoming conferences or events, and so much more! What you focus on depends on your niche.

You can use Google Trends to help you find topics and Tailwind also put out a monthly planner with lists of what topics are trending that month here (for 2020 – it’s free!).

Repurpose Blog Content

Repurpose content to get more done in less time. Take the hours you spent on creating and amazing epic post and grab a paragraph or two for a social update or email to your list.

Reuse images or infographics you have created for social updates. Post videos you created on YouTube, as a social update, or within an applicable blog post.

There are TONS of ways that you can stretch your work without having to reinvent the wheel every time!

Time Box Your Blog Work

Time box to make sure you stay focused and on task.

There’s a difference between “time blocks” and “time boxes”:

  • Time Blocks: Take your daily schedule and block out time to focus on specific tasks, like 1 hour for cleaning, 1 hour for blogging tasks, 30 minutes for self care, etc
  • Time Boxes: Either within your Time Blocks (which are basically buckets of time) or just when you can squeeze in time to work on something, designate how long you have to work on a specific task, like 15 minutes for social updates, 30 minutes for keyword research for a blog post, 1 hour to write a blog post, 45 minutes to write 2 emails (and schedule), etc

By blocking out and mastering your time through these methods, you can get more done in less time by focusing your energies.

Batch Your Blog Content And Tasks

Batching is a popular tactic by pro bloggers to add more focus to your time.

Batching involves taking similar tasks and doing them all at the same time (as your time allows).

For example, do all your blog reporting and planning at the same time – both of these are analytical and use the same part of your brain (though there is some creativity involved in your planning).

Or you could do all your keyword research for the month. Say you have 4 blog posts you want to do (1 per week) – plan out your blog posts then sit down and do all your keyword research in a single sitting for the entire month!

Make a list of all of your common tasks (social updates, emails, content creation, promotions, planning, image/pin creation, reporting, etc) and see how you can get them to relate to each other. When you take similar tasks and lump them together you are requiring your brain to do less multitasking and reduce fatigue (and burnout!).

Setting Goals To Push Yourself

You’ve read it everywhere – set blog goals.

Sure, you may be a new bloggers (or maybe you have been blogging for years), but without creating measurable and actionable goals (big and small) you will merely be looking at numbers on a screen without knowing how or why you are or aren’t getting traffic (etc).

You want your goals to be realistic but also goals that push you to achieve more.

Do you have an email list of 100? Set a goal to create a couple new opt ins in a month to grow your list by 25 subscribers.

Do you have traffic each month of 3,000 visitors? Set a goal to increase that by 500 visitors next month.

The key to goals is to create a plan to achieve them!

Go from your end result – when you have actually met your goal. Now, what steps do you need to take to get there?

And guess what?

If you don’t meet your goal, don’t see this as a failure! Not meeting your goals only indicates that something needs to change. Try something new and see what does work for YOU and YOUR blog.

Create A Blog Post Content Plan (Blog Editorial Calendar)

The absolute best way to be more efficient with your blog content is to plan it out!

This sounds like a no-brainer, but for a lot of us it’s hard to take the time to plan out our blog posts. Sometimes it’s nice to write about what you are currently experiencing or interested in.

BUT, blogging is ultimately NOT ABOUT US AS BLOGGERS!

Blogging is about our audience – what they are interested in, what they are searching for, and what will attract them to read YOUR content.
